Scissor Sharpening Service

We offer a complete sharpening service for all types of scissors (min to max value eg. approx £1000 per pair). We also sharpen Upholstery, Carpet fitters, Dressmakers scissors as well as all types of Professional Hairdressers Scissors - Thinning/Sculptoring/Cutting.

Professional Scissor Service
First we check the scissors-who made them-country of origine-and eyeball them for any obvious damage. We open and close them and do a cut test, this tells us a lot.

We have serviced thousands of Joewell, Tondeo, Jaguar,Passion, Yasaka, Mitzuzaki scissors.

Tips for taking care of your Scissors:

• Clean them thoroughly at the end of each day.
  
  
• Put two drops of scissor oil of the right viscosity (Foley-Belsaw Scissor Lube) on each blade and gently rub in - all over the blades and pivot point.
  
  
• Opening and closing to remove any excess oil.
  
  
• Store your scissors at the end of each day in a dry, warm place thus avoiding moisture or dampness which can lead eventually to rust.
  
  
• Do not misuse them - they are only meant to cut hair - never cut sticky tape!!
  
  
• Avoid dropping your scissors - especially onto a hard surface - if you do drop them please be honest and tell me - I can usually fix them - provided the metal is not fractured

These are manufactured by Oster Escaleps, Wahl USA (for the latter we are an official distributor). There are other varieties also. They are used to "clip" human hair in barbers and hairdressers, as well as dog grooming, sheep, cows and horses. More and more groomers clip cats (especially in France).

At FGP we offer a full sharpening service for Hairdressers, Barbers and Horse clippers. The clippers are usually sent to us through the post - we hone them ("sharpen" them) thoroughly check them over for wear and lightly lubricate them or we do the complete job actually in the customer's premises.

We sharpen Wahl, Oster,Andis and Escaleps clipper sets.

Chef's Knives

We can efficiently sharpen any of the following makes of knives:

Sabatier (French) Global (Japanese) Icel (Portuguese) Chef (German) Victorinox (Swiss) Gustav Emile (German) Sato(Japanese)   PLUS Wustof Dreizack, Bachmayr Kitchen Devil etc. Most chefs prefer an inclusive angle of 25 degrees on double bevelled knives. But we can vary to suit any chef's requirements. We sharpen both sides of a double bevelled knife at the same time, therefore this will produce a burr free edge as the two pairs of grinding wheels are contra-rotating and each bevel will be the same length - therefore the knife will cut perfectly. The machine we use is the "Tru-Hone" made in America. This is encased in stainless steel and complies witht the CE and can, therefore be taken into any kitchen environment. We do offer a sharpening service to Restaurants, Kitchens and Butchers within 100 miles of Manchester. Starting at £1.60 per knife sharpened in your kitchen. We usually grind them at a 25 degree inclusive angle as preferred by "top" chefs.

Our current customers include: The Devonshire Arms and Fell at Bolton Abbey near Skipton,Yorkshire, The Red Lion in Burnsall Village (nearby) and many restaurants throughout the Lake District including: The George in Penrith, The Armathwaite in Bassenthwaite, The Lodore in Borrowdale and the Swan in Newby Bridge and nearer to home the beautiful Italian Restaurant "Fresco Fresco" in Croston. All of these knives are sharpened monthly.

Some hospital kitchens also avail themselves of my services.

REMEMBER A BLUNT KNIFE IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN A SHARP KNIFE (more pressure is needed to cut and the chef is prone to slip resulting in an accident).

Woodwork Tools

Mfrs of Double Glazing (aluminium) are large users of TCT blades - these are called "triple chip" blades - and these can be sharpened on our machines. The grinding machines may be manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic and now CNC. The type of machine used would be chosen with a cognisance of the total number of blades in use.

Frankland Grinding Products (FGP) have a range of grinding machines, both new and second-hand for the sharpening (grinding) of many woodworking tools used in Industry. The main industries concerned who use these tools are Mfrs of Kitchen and Bedroom Furniture. Today this is mainly made from veneered or melamine faced chipboard or MDF (medium density fibre board). These types of timber blunt tools very readily. The tools are principally made from TCT OR HSS (Tungsten Carbide Tipped or High Speed Steel). Whatever type of grinding machine is used the grinding wheel has to be Diamond for TCT or CBN (trade name Borozon) for HSS.

FGP have produced for many years all the different grades of these grinding wheels to achieve the quality of grind that the customer needs and can offer professional advice to all new customers with a list a mile long of regular users. Our prices are very competititive. The main woodworking tools involved are TCT Circular saws and Planer Knives. We have a showroom where these machines can be seen and approved. We also have the exclusive selling rights for Foley-Belsaw U.S.A. who manufacture such machines. The second-hand machines kept in stock are made by Vollmer (Germany) and Weinig (Germany) as well as MVM Italian and Stehle Germany as well as AUTOOL Ltd UK.

We also have grinders for producing mouldings on timber-these are called "Profile Grinders" and are made by AUTOOL UK and Wadkin UK. Finally, we have grinders for "Cutting-Off" HSS saws which often have a chamffer on alternate teeth - these are used for cutting metal.

All of these machines are used by companies that specialise in sharpening tools. We also have machines available to grind guillotine blades usually these are made in Germany and Italy, when new cost up to £60,000, when bought second-hand as did my customer Accrington Grinding, huge savings can be made. Often we train the operator in how to get the most from such a machine.

Garden Tool Maintenace

There are basically three distinct markets:

We supply new and second-hand grinders at very competitive prices.

The mfrs of these grinders include:

They are supplied as 220/240 volts single phase (easiest to set up as they use-household electrics) and Three phase 380/440 volts industrial electrics.

FGP buy and resell second-hand grinders when eg. a grinding company move up market and invest in a newer machine, or when someone retires from the industry.

We sell many second-hand Express Dual. Dual means the machine will grind the cylinder when stripped down from the mower or "in situ" thus saving much time, provided the bearings are still good. The Pilot -a smaller capacity machine targeted towards the Domestic Market for cylinders up to approx 24" long. All cylinder mowers have a bottom blade and these can be ground on the Anglemaster-automatically or by using the FH1.

FGP have an advertisement every month in the "L.G.E." Review (Lawn and Garden Machinery) where we show the second-hand machines that we have for sale often at 1/3 or 1/4 of the new price but in good working order. A list can be provided of customers who chose to buy second hand machines.

For shears we have our own machine, called the AF/EP202 Shear Grinder (single phase) this grinds the edge of each blade and does the "hollow" grinding of the inside edge. It incorporates two different grinding wheels, one plain, parellel sided wheel for sharpening the edge of the clipper and a "Cup" wheel for the hollow grinding. The price of this machine is £724 plus VAT when collected and it comes on a stand with dust extraction facilities. The wheels are 200mm diameter.

For chainsaws we offer (from Foley-Belsaw) the Speed Sharp automatic and manual models for saw pitches of 1/4", 325, 3/8", 404, 1/2".

For the professional sharpener we also supply a bench mounted saw chain breaker, bar rail closer, and a bench mounted rivet spinner.

For Back lapping we supply the Model 365 with stands for bench mounting. This is a single phase machine 115/220 volts-ideal for a quick touch up of your cylinders between major sharpenings.It is fast and easy to set up and connects easily to most cylinder mowers and can sharpen gang mowers whilst still connected to the frame and tractor (BEAVER - TORO- RANSOMMES).

Finally for the "Rotary" variety lawnmower (increasingly more common) we supply many Model 440 - this incorporates an 8" (200mm) grinding wheel , 1/2 or 1 H.P. motor for bench mounting or on a stand at £875.00 plus VAT when collected.
